Top 10 Transportation Stocks To Watch Right Now

I focus more on fundamentals to select the stocks that I trade and suggest on my site. However, I can't ignore technical analysis, and this week there were some very important things that appeared on some very long-term charts. With the S+P 500 (SPY) breaking above 1576 and the Dow Jones industrials (DIA) and the Transportation index (IYT) confirming the move to new all-time highs, the thirteen year secular bear market in stocks is over for now-- and based on history, will be probably for quite a while like for two or three more years.

Because of our lack of knowledge of long-term history, most in my generation were unaware that in the stock market, you usually have a long period where stocks outperform most asset classes and make incredible moves like Dow 4,000 to 14,000. However, then they suffer violent bear markets where they essentially lose 40-50% of their value and take years just to recover to former highs. This process usually plays out over a decade or more, until there is no faith or interest in stocks among most investors and then the process reverses itself over a similar long period. This same vicious pattern played out from the year 2000 until just the last few days-- meaning it lasted for thirteen years. This one was especially viscous because of the severity of the corrections and the extreme volatility the last violent leg down took in the crash of 2008.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Holmes]

Analyst Penelope Butcher calls Ryanair "the best placed airline in our coverage universe," which she pins on the company's pricing power, competitor capacity withdrawals, and bargaining power with manufacturers and airports.

"On our forecasts, the company will still be in a position to match its record 2007 net income result for FY12, and continue to expand toward doubling this result by 2015, owing to modest capacity growth and stability/potential relief in its fuel cost base from calendar 2012 onward," Butcher writes.

While Butcher's base case calls for a 17% climb in share price next year, her most bullish view would have shares up 61% next year. On the downside, her most bearish outlook calls for shares of Ryanair falling 27% in 2012.

The chart above shows the American Depositary Receipts of Ryanair trading in the U.S., although Morgan Stanley recommends buying shares trading in London.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Buffett]

As the world's largest package delivery company, United Parcel Service (UPS) is the kind of toll-bridge operator that Buffett likes to invest in. When a business ships something, UPS gets a cut. Plus the sheer size of its global shipping network give UPS the kind of economic moat that Buffett likes to see. So do high customer-satisfaction ratings and conscientious drivers -- even if they do have to wear shorts.

"This is not a business that you can re-create overnight," says Lowenstein. In fact, competitors have a tough time because UPS is so strong. DHS left the U.S. shipping market in 2009, and the U.S. Postal Service is struggling financially.

That economic moat and broad reach also give UPS the pricing power, high profit margins and steady earnings growth favored by Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway owns 1.4 million shares. Here's another quality the Oracle of Omaha likes: UPS is shareholder friendly, returning excess capital through dividend hikes, share buybacks and debt retirement. "They are good capital allocators. They are not destroying value by doing dumb things," says Lowenstien.

Despite these strengths, UPS looks cheap, because with a price-to-earnings ratio of 14.9, it trades about 30% below its average since 2000. In short, that means today's price is relatively low. "UPS is on sale due to concerns about the economy," says Lowenstein. And like Buffett, Lowenstein is a patient value investor who believes that sooner or later those concerns will blow over. When that happens, UPS stock will deliver for investors who buy now.
